Beverages

Soft Mead

1 quart water, preferably spring water
1 cup honey
1 sliced lemon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg

Boil together all ingredients in a non-metallic pot. While boiling, scrape of the rising "scum" with a wooden spoon. When no more rises, add the following:

pinch salt
juice of 1/2 lemon

Strain and cool. Drink in place of alcoholic mead or wine during Simple Feast.

Blackberry Wine

(Makes 2 to 3 bottles)

4 Lbs. Fresh Blackberries,
3 1/2 Cups Sugar,
3 1/4 Cups Hot Water

Set the berries in a large bowl for about 4 weeks, stirring occasionally. (The berries will small and may begin to mold.) With a mortar and pestle or blender, crush the berries into a very smooth pulp. Stir in the sugar, then the water. Pour into Casks for fermentation. Let the wine age at least 8 months. Air the wine every few days to allow gasses to escape. The longer it is kept, the better it will be. This wine has a gentle port-like flavor when finished, or should be immediately dedicated to a deity.

Lord, by God Almighty,
He does not love me,
Nor I him.
It was because of an herb potion
Of which I drank
And he drank, too: it was a sin.
